Acupuncture has been used for more than 2000 years to promote wellness and to treat diseases. The theory of acupuncture is based on qi (pronounced chee), the vital force of the human body, and meridians, the pathways through which qi flows through the organ systems. Free flow of qi in the body results in well-being; however, if there is a blockage to the flow of qi, it results in pain and illness. Acupuncture, the insertion of fine, sterile needles, at specific points along the meridian pathways works to clear the blockages and restore the free flow of qi.

Factors which affect the smooth flow of qi include trauma, extreme climactic conditions, exposure to harmful microorganisms, poor nutrition or improper diet, as well as the emotional state of an individual. Acupuncture restores the balance, thus allowing for the normal flow of qi throughout the body and restoring health to the mind and body.
